Oak Lawn Neighbors Invited to Support Rainbow Steps as a Symbol of Unity and Belonging at City Hearing<\/h3>\n

Dallas, TX\u00a0<\/span>\u2014 Oak Lawn United Methodist Church is inviting neighbors, community members, and allies to show up in support of its front steps\u2014now painted in rainbow colors\u2014as a visible sign of unity, safety, and belonging in the Oak Lawn neighborhood.<\/h4>\n

The\u00a0<\/span>City of Dallas Historic Preservation \/ Landmark Commission\u00a0<\/span>will hold a public<\/span> hearing on Monday, January 5 at 1:00 PM, where the future of the church\u2019s front steps will be discussed. Members of the public are invited to appear in person to show their support.\u00a0 The commission will convene from\u00a0<\/span>City Council Chambers, 6th Floor at Dallas City Hall (Room 6ES).<\/h4>\n

The rainbow steps at Oak Lawn United Methodist Church were painted in response to\u00a0<\/span>Governor Greg Abbott\u2019s directive to remove rainbow crosswalks.\u00a0 The decision was not an act of defiance, but an expression of faith and solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community.<\/h4>\n

\u201cSilence is not neutral,\u201d said Senior Pastor Rev. Rachel Griffin-Allison. \u201cPainting our steps in the colors of the rainbow is a visible witness to the gospel we preach\u2014that every person is created in the image of God and worthy of safety, dignity, and belonging.\u201d<\/h4>\n

Located at the heart of Oak Lawn, the steps have become more than an entrance to a church. They have emerged as a gathering point, a landmark of welcome, and a reminder that this neighborhood values diversity, care for one another, and shared public life\u2014especially in moments when those values feel under threat.<\/h4>\n

Church leadership hopes the steps will continue to serve as a\u00a0<\/span>uniting symbol for neighbors across Oak Lawn, offering reassurance to LGBTQ+ residents, families, and allies that they are seen, supported, and loved.\u00a0 Community voices matter deeply in this process. Neighbors are encouraged to attend the hearing and speak about what the rainbow steps represent\u2014not just to a church, but to the wider Oak Lawn community.<\/h4>\n
