Safety & Radical Hospitality at Oak Lawn UMC

Our Commitment
At Oak Lawn United Methodist Church, we believe that safety is a ministry of love.
We protect one another not out of fear, but out of faithfulness—to ensure that every person who walks through our doors experiences the welcome and peace of Christ.
Our mission is to amplify God’s love through radical hospitality, serving our neighbors, and standing up for justice.
This commitment extends to caring for one another’s well-being during worship, service, and community gatherings.
Faith and Preparedness
As a church that welcomes people of all backgrounds—including LGBTQ+ individuals, immigrants, and those seeking refuge and belonging—we take seriously our role in creating a space that is both open and secure.
Our approach to safety is grounded in scripture and compassion:
-
“Let justice roll down like waters.” – Micah 6:8
-
“Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers.” – Hebrews 13:2
-
“Whatever you did for one of the least of these siblings of mine, you did for me.” – Matthew 25:40
We strive to live these words by combining vigilance with kindness, ensuring that our community is both welcoming and watchful.
Visible Steps Toward Safety
You may notice new or enhanced safety measures during worship and church events. These are part of our ongoing commitment to care for every person on our campus. Some of these include:
-
Clearly marked exits and medical support locations.
-
Licensed and trained safety personnel present during worship and large gatherings.
-
Ushers and volunteers equipped to assist in emergencies with calm and compassion.
-
Safety awareness reminders during National Church Safety Month and throughout the year.
