Sacred Resistance

At Oak Lawn UMC, we believe that faith calls us not only to prayer and worship—but to bold action in the face of injustice. Sacred Resistance is our social justice and advocacy ministry, grounded in our baptismal vow “to resist evil, injustice, and oppression in whatever forms they present themselves.”

Through education, organizing, and public witness, Sacred Resistance equips our community to respond to local and national issues with courage and compassion. We build partnerships with justice-focused organizations and coalitions, and we show up when it matters—whether through planned campaigns or rapid response efforts.

As United Methodists, we know love is a verb. Sacred Resistance provides opportunities to learn, grow, and take meaningful action in pursuit of equity, dignity, and liberation for all.

Show Up.

We don’t worship from the sidelines. We show up—in the streets, at the polls, in the pews, and at the tables where decisions are made. To be the Church means being fully present in the places where our faith meets the world’s pain. Our presence is part of the protest.

Speak Up.

Silence is not neutral—it’s complicity. We speak up against injustice, hatred, and harm—and for equity, dignity, and belonging. As followers of Jesus, our voices must rise in love and in truth, especially when it’s hard. Because preaching rainbows without naming the storm is not enough.

Lift up.

We lift up those who are weary, grieving, or forgotten. We lift up stories that have been silenced, names that have been erased, and communities under attack. This is the Gospel in action: not just love in theory, but love that lifts. Love that sees. Love that heals.
