Safety & Radical Hospitality at Oak Lawn UMC

Robert Garcia, Jr. – Campus Care & Safety Manager | robert@olumc.org

Our Commitment

At Oak Lawn United Methodist Church, we believe that safety is a ministry of love.

We protect one another not out of fear, but out of faithfulness—to ensure that every person who walks through our doors experiences the welcome and peace of Christ.

Our mission is to amplify God’s love through radical hospitality, serving our neighbors, and standing up for justice.
This commitment extends to caring for one another’s well-being during worship, service, and community gatherings.

Faith and Preparedness

As a church that welcomes people of all backgrounds—including LGBTQ+ individuals, immigrants, and those seeking refuge and belonging—we take seriously our role in creating a space that is both open and secure.

Our approach to safety is grounded in scripture and compassion:

  • “Let justice roll down like waters.” – Micah 6:8

  • “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers.” – Hebrews 13:2

  • “Whatever you did for one of the least of these siblings of mine, you did for me.” – Matthew 25:40

We strive to live these words by combining vigilance with kindness, ensuring that our community is both welcoming and watchful.

Visible Steps Toward Safety

You may notice new or enhanced safety measures during worship and church events. These are part of our ongoing commitment to care for every person on our campus.  Some of these include:

  • Clearly marked exits and medical support locations.

  • Licensed and trained safety personnel present during worship and large gatherings.

  • Ushers and volunteers equipped to assist in emergencies with calm and compassion.

  • Safety awareness reminders during National Church Safety Month and throughout the year.

Every action we take begins with hospitality—a friendly greeting, a helpful direction, or a reassuring presence. Our goal is that safety never feels like a barrier, but rather another way we demonstrate love for one another.

Training & Culture of Care

Our staff, volunteers, and safety personnel receive ongoing training to ensure readiness in emergencies while maintaining an atmosphere of warmth and inclusion.  We also continue to review and improve our security practices in consultation with professionals and community partners.

At Oak Lawn UMC, preparedness is part of our rhythm of care—it helps us respond faithfully to whatever may come, while keeping our doors and hearts open.

Balancing Welcome and Wisdom

We understand that in today’s world, churches must be both places of refuge and responsibility.  That balance is at the heart of everything we do: creating an environment where everyone feels safe to worship, to serve, and to be fully themselves.

If you have questions or concerns about safety, or would like to learn more about how to get involved in our hospitality and safety ministries, please contact our Campus Care & Safety Manager at robert@olumc.org.
