Our Mission
At Oak Lawn United Methodist Church, we amplify God’s love through radical hospitality, serving our neighbors, and standing up for justice.
We believe the love of Christ transforms lives and communities—and that love grows stronger when it is shared freely with all people.
Our Core Values
We are guided by five core commitments that shape our life together:
-
Faith in Action: Living out the Gospel through service, advocacy, and compassion.
-
Inclusive Love: Welcoming every person as a reflection of the image of God—regardless of race, gender identity, sexual orientation, immigration status, ability, or economic situation.
-
Community & Connection: Building relationships rooted in grace, accountability, and mutual care.
-
Courage & Justice: Speaking truth in love, standing against oppression, and embodying the justice of Jesus.
-
Hope & Renewal: Nurturing faith that restores, heals, and calls us to co-create a more loving world.
Our Story
Founded in 1874, Oak Lawn United Methodist Church has stood at the heart of Dallas for over 150 years—a place of worship, refuge, and renewal for generations.
Our history is one of transformation: from a small community church on the prairie to a vibrant urban ministry that welcomes thousands of neighbors each week for worship, meals, recovery gatherings, and community care.
In every era, we’ve adapted to meet the needs of our city—opening our doors wider, expanding our ministries, and declaring that God’s love has no limits.
Today, Oak Lawn UMC continues to be a spiritual home for people from all walks of life who seek belonging, purpose, and grace.
A Reconciling Congregation
Oak Lawn UMC is proud to be a Reconciling Congregation within the United Methodist Church.
This means we publicly affirm our commitment to full inclusion of LGBTQ+ persons in every aspect of church life—leadership, marriage, ordination, and membership.
Our reconciling witness grows from the conviction that God’s grace is for everyone. We celebrate diversity as a divine gift and strive to create a church where all can fully live into their callings, identities, and relationships.
“We resist evil, injustice, and oppression in whatever forms they present themselves.”
— United Methodist Baptismal Vows

Whether you are new to faith, returning after a long time, or seeking a place to grow and serve, there’s a home for you here.
